Working to ensure that every child in every school in
Colorado can have healthy and appealing food

What stands in the way?

District-centric rules & regulations, access to federal Free and Reduced Lunch reimbursements, and lack of state-wide standards.

What changes need to be made?

  • Enable choice of food service vendors while retaining access to FRL subsidies through changes in the Code of CO Regulations. Ensure choice and competition.
  • Establish state-wide standards for all beverages and snacks offered to students at school.
  • Create an environment of accountability through active parents, students, and communities.

Working to ensure that no kid goes hungry in Colorado

Colorado’s Children Hunger Facts

  • In Colorado, one in seven children are hungry or at risk for malnutrition. Twenty-one percent of children in Denver are living in poverty and are at risk of hunger.
  • Between 2000 and 2006, Colorado had a 73% increase in the number of children living in poverty, the highest rate of increase in the nation
  • Colorado is ranked 45th in numbers of students participating in the Free/Reduced price breakfast program (35%).  If we increased this rate to 60%, CO would receive an additional $9 million from the federal government. Colorado does not have a school breakfast mandate in state law.
